Paris Palimpsests Project

2023, BnF, Paris France.

The “Paris Palimpsests Project” is a collaborative initiative focused on the in-depth study and digital documentation of significant palimpsested manuscripts held at the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF). A key objective of this project was the comprehensive imaging and analysis of two primary manuscripts, Grec 2575 and Supplément Grec 257, alongside selected portions of a third, Latin 12161. Through the application of multispectral imaging by EMEL, the project aimed to uncover previously unknown texts concealed within these ancient documents.

The project sought to openly distribute the resulting high-quality images, supported by the Huma-Num consortium, making these valuable historical texts accessible to a wider scholarly community and the public. Researchers Victor Gysembergh and Emanuel Zingg organized and scholarly lead scholarly the project. EMEL extends its gratitude to the reproduction department of the Bibliothèque nationale de France for their hospitality during the month-long imaging session.
